Your Job Doesn’t Care About You

Here's how you can fight back

Two weeks ago, I witnessed something wild at a café.

An employee politely asked his boss for a day off to care for his sick wife.

A pretty reasonable request, right?

Not according to his boss, who exploded on a Zoom call like a microwave burrito left in too long.

“I don’t care if your wife dies!” he roared—loud enough for the entire café to hear.

This from the same guy who probably hands out “We’re a Family Here” mugs at the annual holiday party.

In that moment, it hit me:

If your job won’t let you care for your family... it’s not a job—it’s a cage.

Lesson #1: You Deserve Control Over Your Time.

When you work for someone else, your time is only yours in theory—like a beach towel at a crowded resort. The second you let your guard down, someone’s plopping their stuff on it.

Build your own thing, and you decide when you work—and when you don’t. No “requests,” no pleading. Just freedom.

Lesson #2: Bad Bosses Are Life’s Way of Saying ‘Start Your Own Business.’

Every unreasonable demand, every guilt-trippy email sent at 11 PM, is the universe flashing a neon sign that says, “YOU COULD BE BUILDING YOUR OWN EMPIRE INSTEAD.”

It’s like babysitting someone else’s cranky toddler—except the toddler is 45, has “Manager” in their LinkedIn headline, and thinks “urgent” means “I just thought of this.”

Lesson #3: Toxic Workplaces Teach You the Value of Freedom.

Sure, you can endure a terrible job. People survive shark attacks too—that doesn’t mean you should dive into the water wearing a meat necklace.

When your boss cares more about timesheets than your humanity, the message is clear: Your loyalty is optional. So is staying.

Bottom line:

If your boss is a walking red flag, it’s not a sign to work harder for them. It’s a sign to work smarter for you.

Start small, but start now.

Build a business that lets you take a day off when life happens—without begging someone whose mood swings could power a soap opera.

Because if your job won’t let you care for your family... you’re not employed—you’re imprisoned.

And life’s too short for cages.
